Questions or something not working? Email support@stickermint.com with your store's .myshopify.com address and, if it's about a rule, the product and the cart you tried. We reply within one business day.

Getting started

  1. Install Mint Limits from the Shopify App Store. The app home shows a setup checklist.
  2. Add a rule: choose the rule type (each item, combined, or order value), what it applies to (all products, collections, products or variants) and the limits. The editor shows the exact message customers will see.
  3. Save. The first saved rule adds “Mint Limits order limits” to Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules in your Shopify admin. From then on, checkout checks every order.
  4. Product pages: on the app home click Add product block; the theme editor opens with the Order limits block ready under your product details. Click Save. Then click Turn on cart messages and save again.
  5. Test: open the Simulator, add products and quantities, and run the checkout check. It uses the same rule engine as checkout.

How rules work

  • Each item rules limit every product (all its variants counted together) or every variant on its own: a minimum, a maximum and/or “sold in multiples of”.
  • One rule per item: each cart item follows its most specific “each item” rule — variant, then product, then collection, then all products. A rule for tagged customers beats one for everyone at the same level; otherwise the rule higher in your list wins. So a product rule can allow more than a store-wide maximum.
  • Combined rules add up every matching item in the cart (for example a mixed case of wine) and always apply, in addition to the item rules. They only apply when the cart contains at least one matching item.
  • Order value rules (Pro) compare the cart subtotal — after product discounts, before order discounts, shipping and taxes — with your minimum or maximum, set in your store currency and converted with Shopify's rate for customers paying in another currency.
  • Customer tags (Pro) only count for customers signed in to their customer account, so an email typed at checkout never changes the limits. Type tags the way they appear on your customers; the app also checks the lower-case spelling.
  • Gift cards are left out of “all products” and collection rules; a product or variant rule can still name them.
  • Limits apply to each order. The app doesn't count past orders.

What customers see

  • Checkout: Shopify shows each message at the top of checkout and won't let the customer pay until the cart meets your rules. This includes Buy it now and express payment buttons (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal). At most 10 messages are shown; the last one says how many more items need changes.
  • Languages: built-in messages in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese, chosen by the checkout language. On Pro, rewrite any message on the Messages page, add other languages, or give a single rule its own message. Placeholders: {item} {quantity} {min} {max} {multiple} {difference} {total}.
  • Adding to cart is never blocked. Customers can build their cart one item at a time; checkout asks them to fix quantities.
  • Product page block: shows the limits for the selected variant (and how many are already in the cart) and sets your theme's quantity selector to start at the minimum and step by the pack size. If your theme uses Shopify's own quantity rules for a variant (B2B), those are left as they are. The selector is only changed when it's visible and a valid quantity exists.
  • Cart messages: the app embed lists what to change just above the checkout button on the cart page and in cart drawers. If your theme places its checkout button unusually, enter a CSS selector in the embed's “Place before” setting. Collection membership for cart messages comes from the collections your products are published in; checkout always uses Shopify's full collection data.

Limits

  • Free: up to 3 rules (each item and combined). Pro ($3.99 every 30 days, 7-day free trial): up to 100 rules, order value rules, customer tag rules and custom messages.
  • Collection rules can use up to 4 different collection selections (each any mix of collections, 50 collections in total). Rules can name up to 250 products and variants in total, and up to 20 customer tags.
  • Shopify passes checkout rules at most 10,000 bytes of settings. The app shows how much your rules use and won't save a change that doesn't fit; long custom messages and long product lists use the most.
  • These limits keep the checkout rule well inside Shopify's performance limits: we measure it on carts of up to 200 lines with the largest rule set the app allows. If Shopify ever can't run the rule (for example an unusually large cart), checkout continues rather than blocking the customer.
  • Orders you create yourself in the admin (draft orders) aren't blocked by the app while you edit them.

Troubleshooting

  • Checkout isn't checking my rules. Check the app home: the status should say On. If someone turned off “Mint Limits order limits” in Settings → Checkout, the home page offers to turn it back on. Rules marked Paused on the Rules page aren't running (the reason is shown).
  • A rule doesn't apply to a product. Another, more specific rule may apply to it. The Rules page warns about overlaps, and the Simulator shows which rule each item follows.
  • The product block doesn't show. It only shows for products with a rule (in the theme editor you'll see a placeholder). Make sure you saved the theme after adding it.
  • “Your store already has the maximum number of checkout rules”. Shopify allows 25 checkout rules per store. Remove one you no longer use in Settings → Checkout → Checkout rules, then save your rule again.

Uninstalling

Uninstall from Settings → Apps. Shopify removes the checkout rule and the theme blocks with the app; nothing was added to your theme's code. Your rules are deleted 48 hours later, so a quick reinstall keeps them.
